Plus: Ravens back out of major trade…

Good afternoon. Today’s edition brings you the top news from around the sports world. Let’s get right to it.

Kyle

1) Bam Adebayo scores 83, breaks Kobe’s record

The Miami Heat center scored 83 points in last night’s 150-129 win over the Wizards, beating Kobe Bryant’s legendary 81-point game to become the 2nd-highest scoring effort in NBA history (behind Wilt Chamberlain's 100).

  • Heading into yesterday’s game, Adebayo’s career high was 41 points—a figure he had passed by halftime, with 43.
  • Adebayo made 36 free throws on 43 attempts last night, setting new NBA records for both figures by a wide margin.
  • He also shot 20-43 from the field and 7-22 from three-point range, becoming the only player to score 70+ points while shooting below 50%.

2) Ravens back out of Crosby trade, sign Hendrickson instead

The Baltimore Ravens last night backed out of a previously agreed trade for Raiders DE Maxx Crosby, meaning the team will receive their 2026 and 2027 1st-round picks back from Las Vegas.

  • The Ravens rescinded the deal over unspecified medical concerns that arose during Crosby’s physical, according to multiple reports.
  • Other reports, citing unnamed NFL GMs, say the perception around the league is the Ravens got cold feet on Crosby, rather than new medical info—a claim Ravens sources deny.
  • Hours after the Crosby deal fell through, the Ravens signed former Bengals edge rusher Trey Hendrickson to a 4-yr deal worth $112M.

3) Team USA faces WBC elimination after Italy loss

The Americans were upset by Team Italy 8-6 in the World Baseball Classic last night, setting up a potential elimination scenario for Team USA—depending on the result of tonight’s Italy-Mexico game.

  • Team USA will advance to the WBC elimination bracket if Italy beats Mexico.
  • But if the opposite result happens, Team USA’s fate would be left up to tiebreakers between them, Italy, and Mexico.
  • In short: Mexico would need to beat Italy while scoring at least five runs (and no extra innings) for Team USA to advance, with extra innings making things more complicated.

Can the Americans’ dream come true?

4) NFL free agency update

The new league year officially begins today, following a recent flurry of free agent deals. The latest news:

  • The Colts re-signed QB Daniel Jones to a 2-yr, $88M deal with $50M guaranteed, keeping him off the franchise tag.
  • The Patriots signed former Packers WR Romeo Doubs to a 4-yr, $80M deal.
  • The Raiders traded QB Geno Smith to the Jets for a swap of 6th- and 7th-round picks.
  • The Ravens and Lions both restructured their starting QB's contracts—Lamar Jackson and Jared Goff—to free up ~$40M and ~$32M in cap space, respectively.

5) Syracuse basketball fires head coach Autry

The Orange fired head coach Adrian Autry after Syracuse’s season ended in the ACC tournament yesterday, marking his third straight year without an NCAA tournament berth.

  • Overall, ‘Cuse has failed to qualify for March Madness for five consecutive seasons, the school’s longest drought since before Jim Boeheim was hired in 1976.
  • Syracuse also saw its home basketball attendance this season plummet to its lowest level since 2002.

Can ‘Cuse change their chances on the court?
