2) Study finds ~75% of deceased NFL players had CTE
Nearly three-quarters of former NFL players who died between 2008-23 had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease, per a new Boston University study.
- Researchers analyzed brain donations from 387 of 2,362 former players who died during that period, finding evidence of CTE in 93.5% of donated brains.
- After accounting for potential donation bias—where players experiencing CTE symptoms are more likely to donate—researchers estimate ~74.5% of all deceased players during that time had CTE.
- However, some experts caution that the study’s figure may be overstated, and doesn't necessarily reflect today's players.
