1) US ski legend Mikaela Shiffrin snaps 8-year Olympic drought

Shiffrin, the most decorated Alpine skier in World Cup history, won gold in the slalom earlier this morning to snap an 0-for-8 medal streak at the Winter Games dating back to 2018.

  • It’s Shiffrin's third gold medal overall since 2014, tying her with snowboarder Shaun White and bobsledder Kaillie Humphries for third-most golds by a US Winter Olympian.
  • In other Olympic record-setting news: Norway's Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo won a 10th career gold medal this morning, becoming just the second Olympian ever to reach double digits behind Michael Phelps (23 golds).

2) Chiefs restructure Mahomes’ contract amid cap troubles

Kansas City used its superstar QB’s contract to free up ~$43.5M in cap space for next season by converting $54.5M of Mahomes’ salary into a signing bonus. That amount is now spread equally over the remaining years of Mahomes’ deal.

  • The Chiefs were $50M+ over the cap prior to the Mahomes move, and still aren’t cap compliant at the moment. But they can now get there with just a move or two.
  • Mahomes tore his ACL in December, and said recently that he’s aiming to be back in action in time for the start of the NFL regular season in September.

3) UCLA’s Mick Cronin ejects his own player

The Bruins men’s basketball coach told F Steven Jamerson to head to the locker room unprompted after Jamerson committed a flagrant foul in the second half of UCLA’s blowout 82-59 loss at #15 Michigan State.

  • Jamerson, a former MSU student, was whistled for the flagrant after fouling a Spartan from behind on a breakaway dunk, leading both players to square up.
  • His unusual ejection came as UCLA was in the middle of losing consecutive games by 20+ points for the first time since 1944-45, following a blowout loss to #1 Michigan.

4) Arch Manning leads updated 2026 Heisman odds

Some sportsbooks have adjusted their 2026 Heisman Trophy odds in response to Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss winning his eligibility hearing last week, allowing him to play this coming season.

  • Texas QB Arch Manning is the early Heisman favorite with +550 odds on BetOnline (15.5% chance), while Chambliss (13.5%) and Notre Dame QB CJ Carr (12%) are narrowly behind.
  • Other top candidates include Oregon QB Dante Moore (10%), Indiana QB Josh Hoover (9%), and Ohio State QB Julian Sayin (8%).
  • A Texas player hasn't won the Heisman since RB Ricky Williams in 1998, while Ole Miss has never had a player win the award.

Who will take home the trophy?

5) Details emerge on MLBPA leader’s shock resignation

MLB Players Association executive director Tony Clark officially resigned yesterday evening, with multiple reports attributing the move to an internal inquiry—not an ongoing federal investigation into alleged financial misdeeds.

  • The MLBPA inquiry reportedly uncovered evidence that Clark had an inappropriate relationship with his sister-in-law, an MLBPA employee who was hired in 2023.
  • The players’ union is expected to vote on an interim replacement for Clark as early as today, with major negotiations over a new CBA less than 10 months away.
