Plus: A new sport’s been making a racquet…

1) Indiana completes legendary worst-to-first CFB run

The #1-ranked Hoosiers, who began the season as the losingest major program in the history of college football, defeated #10 Miami 27-21 last night to win the first national championship in school history.

  • Indiana is the first team in modern college football to finish a season 16-0 (third overall), and the first first-time national championship winner since Florida in 1998.
  • The Hoosiers, led by head coach Curt Cignetti and Heisman-winning QB Fernando Mendoza, featured a roster that was ranked 72nd in all of CFB by 247Sports’ Team Talent Composite rankings.

2) Warriors star Jimmy Butler suffers season-ending ACL tear

The star Warriors forward was injured in the third quarter of last night’s game against the Heat, when Butler leapt, collided with another player, and landed awkwardly. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Butler tore his ACL and will be out through at least June.

  • His injury comes as the surging Warriors (25-19) have won 12 of their past 16 games amid strong performances from Butler.
  • It also throws a wrench into Golden State’s current plans ahead of the Feb. 5 trade deadline, after the Warriors had been active in recent weeks searching for roster upgrades.

Two NFL teams with open jobs have zeroed in on new head coaches within the past 24 hours, according to reports.

  • The Miami Dolphins officially hired Packers DC Jeff Hafley as their new head coach, signing the 46-year-old to a five-year contract.
  • Meanwhile, the Tennessee Titans are reportedly signing 49ers DC Robert Saleh to a five-year head coaching deal, marking his second stint as a head coach (Jets from 2021-24).

They join the New York Giants (John Harbaugh) and Atlanta Falcons (Kevin Stefanski), in hiring new head coaches this cycle, with six other NFL teams still searching.

4) NBA announces All-Star Game starters

Lakers G Luka Dončić (West) and Bucks F Giannis Antetokounmpo (East) led the All-Star voting this season in their respective conferences. LeBron James was not named a starter, ending his NBA-record streak of 21 straight All-Star starts. See the full starting rosters.

  • For the first time in All-Star history, there are no positional requirements for the starting lineup, with four guards/wings named starters in the East alongside Giannis.
  • There’s also a new USA v. World format this year instead of the usual East v. West, with three teams of eight All-Stars—two American teams, one international—squaring off in a round-robin format.

5) Investors are launching yet another racket sport: typti

On Monday, an 80-person investment group led by Tennis Channel founder Steve Bellamy unveiled a new racquet sport called typti, described as a cross between tennis and badminton.

  • The investment group—including celebrities like Drew Brees, JJ Abrams, Tony Robbins, and Bert Kreischer—is seeking to capitalize off the growing popularity of pickleball with a new game that can be played on the same court.
  • Typti Inc. says it wants to appeal to tennis purists who may pooh-pooh the idea of pickleball—but would flock to a similar racquet sport, like typti, where their tennis skills are rewarded.
