📰🏟️ Instant classic

18 innings later…

Good afternoon. Welcome back to another week full of top sports stories and interesting links. Let’s rock and roll.

Kyle & Peter

1) Dodgers beat Blue Jays in 18-inning WS classic

Los Angeles outlasted Toronto 6-5 thanks to a walk-off homer from 1B Freddie Freeman in the bottom of the 18th, closing out a Game 3 that took nearly seven hours. The 18 innings matches the all-time World Series record, set by the Dodgers and Red Sox in 2018.

  • The game featured 25 position players, 19 different pitchers (a postseason record), 609 pitches, and 37 runners left on base (another playoff record).
  • Freeman became the first player ever to hit multiple walk-off home-runs in the WS, while Shohei Ohtani became the first player to reach base nine times in a WS game (2 2B, 2 HR, 5 BB).
  • Game 4 is tonight, with the first pitch coming ~17 hours after Game 3 ended. The Dodgers now hold a 2-1 series lead.

A WS game for the ages

2) 76ers backcourt is off to the best start in NBA history

Philadelphia has jumped out to a 3‑0 start, thanks to the record-breaking performance of their two guards: Tyrese Maxey and rookie VJ Edgecombe (the #3 pick in June’s draft).

  • Between them, they’ve scored 182 points in the first three games of the season—the most by any starting backcourt since starters were first tracked in 1970-71.
  • Elsewhere: Jazz G Lauri Markkanen became the first Utah Jazz player this century to drop 50+ points, while T-Wolves star Anthony Edwards is expected to miss two weeks.

3) All 32 NHL teams play today for last time this season

The NHL Frozen Frenzy is the one night each year where every NHL team is in action and every game has staggered start times, so fans can theoretically catch a piece of all 16 contests live.

  • The action kicks off at 5 pm CT when the Philadelphia Flyers face the Penguins in Pittsburgh, and ends in San Jose with another matchup of in-state divisional rivals (Sharks v. LA Kings; 10 pm CT).
  • ESPN is hosting a whip-around show featuring live cut-ins for all 16 games, in addition to a tripleheader on its flagship network.

The WNBA and its players association (WNBPA) have until Friday to reach a new collective bargaining agreement that avoids a lockout—but one side says that’s looking extremely unlikely.

  • “We have worked hard to be able to say on Friday, we did it. Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen,” Erin D. Drake, senior advisor and legal counsel for the WNBPA, told The Athletic.
  • Players are seeking a salary framework tied to revenue percentages, while the league wants to keep the current fixed salary cap with target-based revenue sharing.

5) Spurs star Victor Wembanyama dominates the court—and the card market

Wemby is currently averaging 31.0 points, 13.8 rebounds, and 4.8 blocks per game, with the Spurs off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 2017. But he’s also putting up MVP numbers in the sports trading card market.

  • Wemby is by far the top-seller among active NBA players, per data tool Market Movers, with ~1.5x more card sales than Mavs rookie Cooper Flagg in second.
  • Wemby’s cards are also skyrocketing in value, with prices rising a collective ~16% over the past week.
