1) Hurricanes win Game 4 to even Stanley Cup Final
Carolina captain Jordan Staal scored a falling backhand goal late in the 3rd period to break a 3-3 tie with the Vegas Golden Knights, and eventually win the game for the Hurricanes.
- Carolina has now evened the series at 2-2, with Staal becoming the first player since 1982 to score a goal in each of the first 4 games of the Stanley Cup Final.
- The series is now essentially a best-of-3, where Carolina has home-ice advantage, with Game 5 in Raleigh tomorrow night.
Hurricanes’ luck continues in Vegas
2) Soccer club places major Kalshi bet against itself
The owners of a top soccer club in Spain’s La Liga placed a “multimillion dollar bet against itself” on prediction market Kalshi as an insurance policy, per Semafor.
- The team was reportedly on the brink of dropping to a lower league and losing tens of millions of dollars in ticket and broadcast revenue.
- So the owners turned to Kalshi—via a sports insurance broker, which appears to be legal—and placed a large bet against their squad in the final game as a hedge.
- The team ended up losing 1-0, but the margin of defeat was narrow enough to stay in La Liga’s top tier (though the owners lost the bet).
An unorthodox insurance policy
3) White Sox rookie hits walk-off HR in MLB debut
Sox OF Braden Montgomery hit his first career HR in his first career MLB game last night. The 2-run blast came with 2 outs in the bottom of the 10th, giving Chicago a 6-5 walk-off victory.
- Montgomery is just the 5th MLB player since 1900 to hit a walk-off homer in their debut.
- The 23-year-old is ranked as the White Sox’s #1 overall prospect, and posted a .970 OPS in the minors this year.
- Montgomery is the 12th player to debut for the White Sox this season—but despite their youth, Chicago holds the 4th-best record in the AL (35-31).
4) Serena’s comeback hits snag after partner injury
Serena Williams, 43, played a successful first match in her return to tennis after ~4 years alongside 19-year-old doubles partner Victoria Mboko.
- But Mboko suffered a hard fall during her singles match earlier today and was forced to retire from the match, putting her and Williams’ status in limbo.
- It’s unclear the extent of the injury sustained by Mboko, who’s scheduled to play her next match with Williams tomorrow.
Could Williams’ comeback be cut short?
5) USWNT wins scrappy friendly vs. Brazil
Sophia Wilson forced an own goal in the second half for the US women’s soccer team as they defeated the home squad Brazil 1-0 in last night’s friendly match.
- Brazil ended with just 9 players after receiving a combined 8 red cards..
- Coach Arthur Elias and his staff accounted for 4 red cards, while players received the other 4 (half during the match, half after the final whistle).
- The USWNT will now go on a hiatus from international competition until the qualifying cycle for the 2027 World Cup begins on Nov. 27.
